“I recognise the Prankqueans who presented Brigid 2021 at the Casula Powerhouse on 7 February this, at an event supported by the Irish Consulate in Sydney. This was a celebration of St Brigid’s Day. Brigid is a patron saint of Ireland. She was also a pre-Christian Celtic fertility goddess. St Brigid’s Day (La Fheile Bride) in Ireland announces the coming of spring. It was also one of the major pre-Christian celebrations known as Imbolc. The theme of this event was Brigid as a healer. I want to acknowledge those performers, poets, and presenters involved in Brigid 2021: Aine de Paor; Gabrielle Carey; Rosie McDonald; Jacqui McPhee; Cliona Molins; Anne Casey; and Julie McFarland. I should acknowledge the presence at the event of the Irish Consul-General in Sydney Owen Feeney and Vice-Consul Adriene Hickey. The Irish Government support St Brigid’s Day throughout the world in celebration of the creativity and contribution of Irish women.
